Social Unrest - Demo + Live shows 1980-1983

Social Unrest came from Hayward California and formed in 1979. They had the great fortune of having their first two records produced by Dead Kennedy's guitarist East Bat Ray. Those two records were the only ones to feature original singer Kreetin Kaos who left c.1984. This demo and these live shows feature his vocal talents. The Mabuhay and unknown show are soundboard recordings so sound is excellent, the demo is also excellent quality. The On Broadway show was recorded from the audience and is rough but has three unreleased songs on it. Lots of rare songs on all these recordings. The live unknown show was just two songs someone stuck on the end of a tape. Does anyone know where it is from? I'd like to get a copy of the whole show.

  1. Hey, just found your site & added you to my "other places to go" - some interesting stuff here!!!
Just grabbed the "Northern Exposure" stuff I'm looking forward to This

  2. Enjoy that Northern Exposure, bristolboy. It's got some great stuff on it.

  3. Very cool post,Social Unrest were a great band. I especially like the early live stuff. Thanks and keep up the good work!!

  4. Thanks Frank. I definitely prefer the original line up of Social Unrest with Kreetin Kaos singing and wish Rat In A Maze was a full LP instead of just a 12" ep. They had enough songs for it and it would have been a highly rated classic I believe. Anyways, enjoy the Social Unrest.

  5. Greetings,
    Mark Manslaughter here(real SU drummer).
Just wanted to clear up something. The 1st show you have posted is not our first gig.Our first show was October 1979 at the Mabuhay Gardens,SF.
Havent heard these yet.But it appears the first one has alot of Bob Weaver material.(1st SU vocalist)I'll give a listen and see whats what.
Have'nt heard that demo in years, cheers for posting it!We mean it maaaaaaan!!

  6. Just gave these a quick preview...The Mabuhay show is in fact Bob W. on vocals. It is a gig we did opening for the Jim Carroll band of all
people.Have this on reel to reel somewhere.
The unknown gig tracks are anyone's guess...
Cant place them at this time. The unknown track
title's on the OB gig are in set order:Uncle Scam,
Lies and Threats and City Police.Fun times those.

  7. Thanks Mark!! That Mab show was given to me as the first show and I went with it because there isn't any way for me to know otherwise. It's an interesting show and that demo is fantastic. Would be nice for that to get an official release.

  8. Mark, thanks for the Mab correction and for the missing song titles to the On Broadway show. Much appreciated!! And thanks for making all this great music!!!

  9. Cheers Mate!Appreciate your kind words and support. I have a ton of this kind of stuff in
storage. If possible at some point I could shoot some your way for you to check out.Have a lot of
soundboard recordings from all era's of SU.
Some nice sounding bootlegs as well.Couple that come to mind,SU and DKs On Broadway soundboard.
    SU and Ramones Sacramento,crowd bootleg.Fun.
Quite a few others as well.I'll keep you posted.

  10. Thanks Mark, would love to hear those shows and anything else you want to send!

  11. Hello Mark,
I'm in contact with Jimmy Poplaski (I've actually released on my label the demos of Bad Influence and Teenage Warning).
I sent him a copy of the 1981 demo of Social Unrest I had from another source.
Can you get in touch with me? I have some recordings that may interest you. My email is
Talk to you soon, greetings from France

  12. Hello Bat29
I enjoy your blog, there are a lot of nice stuff.
Is the Social Unrest demo your own rip? I'm looking for an upgrade from the direct cassette source.
Please get in touch with me we can talk about music :)
    All the best,

  13. Hello Ali,
Thanks. The Social Unrest demo is something I copied from a cassette I had in my collection since 1985. The cassette is in my blog header photo. It's the ones with Zero, Rotters, and Screamers in the middle of the bottom row.

  14. Helle Bat29
Thanks for the infos. Can you give me your email? I'll contact you in private.
Otherwise you have mine above, thanks !

  15. I've had for many years the live cassette tape which just says live unknown 2 tracks 1 General Enemy 2 Handcuffs Too Tight on the blogspot. I've got it labelled as Ruthies Inn , Berkeley 25/6/83. My copy is 6 tracks which also include 'Red , White & Blue' 'Black Sheep' 'Parents...' 'The Lords Prayer'.
I use to swop tapes with a guy in D.C. who did it for me (perhaps 1986) and relying on his labelling being accurate. (Manchester , UK).

  16. Paul, thanks for identifying that unknown show. I'd like to get the rest of the show from you.

  17. I'm clueless how to download stuff or is it upload?!. I'll ask my mate who puts all my tapes and vinyl on cd & video on DVD but if you wanna send an e-mail to the e-mail address i left , then i'm happy to send a cd copy of it. I've downloaded plenty of stuff from your website so i'm happy to pay to send it over.
