The Normals were one of the first Punk bands in New Orleans and they existed from 1977 to 1979. In 1978 they released their one and only single which a classic of the time. Members of the band can be see in the film DOA - A Rite Of Passage at one of the Sex Pistols gigs. In mid 1979 they moved to New York City but not much happened for them and they soon broke up. In the 1990s a CD titled Your Punk Heritage was released that featured the single, demos and live tracks. A must have CD. Also, in 2007 another CD was released titled 1978 Recordings and is impossible to find. It's on a Japanese label and is out of print. Here, also, is the Vacation Is For You demo which has different versions of songs that appear on both CDs.

ReplyDeleteLove the normals, thanks great post !!
ReplyDeleteThe Normals were/are friends of mine. I hung flyers for them, roadied, and opened for them (once). I saw almost every show. They were quite possibly the best band to ever come outa New Orleans....
ReplyDeleteThis IS the best band New Orleans to ever come out of New Orleans. Although they were only together 77-79(not 77-84 as stated elsewhere)They had a loyal following who went to see them 3-4 X's a week as I did. Don't get all this talk of them moving to NYC since they were gone for either 3wks or mths. Which was exactley how long I was told they would be gone. Was also told by Charlie(who later wrote something outrageously different)that ALL their equipment was stolen outside CBGB's before ever playing. They went to Nashville to record(they sounded so much better) when they would have done better at C Saint in Metairie was too much. Was obviously too much for them to endure. Many bands were formed from the crowd who went to see The Normals. At least one was signed as surely they would have been. The Normals were ahead of most of the country as I found after moving to S.F.,Ca. The more successful musicians(David Byrne for one)even went to see them. They opened for the Ramones,B-52's,Iggy Pop,Dead Boys and many others that played in N.O.'s. What happened in NYC couldn't have sucked much more if that was the truth, have never heard anything to the contrary from anyone during that time.
Deletenever had our stuff stolen... cheata chrome borrowed my amp and fried it during his set....we played cb's a bunch of times...dont know where that came from... not me
